πŸ‡§πŸ‡ͺ Basic Bank Account in Belgium

Directive 2014/92/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 July 2014 β€” Payment Accounts Directive (PAD).

Implemented in Belgium through Book VII, Title 3, Chapter 8, Articles VII.56/1–VII.59/3.

Key Provision

Article 16 β€” Right of Access to a Payment Account with Basic Features

This provision requires EU Member States to ensure that any consumer legally residing in the European Union has the right to open and use a basic payment account.

This right applies regardless of the person’s place of residence.

The concept of legal residence covers not only EU citizens but also third-country nationals who have a legal basis for staying in the EU. The Directive explicitly includes asylum seekers.

Another Important Provision

Article 15 β€” Non-discrimination

Banks must not discriminate against applicants on the grounds of nationality or place of residence when they apply to open a payment account.

These provisions establish an important legal framework for Ukrainian citizens residing in Belgium under temporary protection.
